Hey man....glad to hear that you have this problem. Sorry Im not making fun...I have this very same problem on my 01 Savage for the past 9 months and haven't been able to confirm where it comes from. See my post on

Front pulley oil seal leak - Ram 4-25-2003 (6)

I have two theories:

1. The oil seal behind the front pulley is busted and is leaking oil. Tumi said he had the smiliar problem and changed the seal. But, others think they haven't seen this any where in the this forum.

2. Last week I found out that the speadometer cable oil leak could be the one that causes this. There is a cover right under the carb, this covers some grooves on the engine case. The oil leaking from the speadometer cable base runs thru these grooves and then go down behind the pulley and end up on that bolt.

So I removed that above mentioned cover, cleaned all the area real well. Re tightened the speadometer cable. The area behind the pulley is still not clean though. Its been two days since I did that cleaning and it still is leaking some oil. But, this could be the oil that is already splattered behind the pulley thats coming out.

Every day after each ride I check out that speadometer cable for leak. If the oil drops stop after about a week and speadometer does not leak then we know that is the problem. If the oil drops dont stop and speadometer cable is clean then I guess its the pulley oil seal.

If that is the case we need to replace that seal. I heard its easy, once you have the front pulley off. Its really tough to get it off I hear.

Well I will keep ya posted and you do the same too.

thanks,
Ram
